Hearing Tests

The hearing test appointment will last approximately 90 minutes in total. First, we will have you fill out a short questionnaire about your hearing history. Then the specialist will discuss your purpose for the visit and what you would like to accomplish. Next, we will use a video otoscope (a camera that sees inside your ears) to ensure that your ears canals are clear. You will be able to see inside your ears on the monitor. Then we will take you through a series of tests to determine your ability to hear the different frequencies, how well you understand speech, and if possible, what the cause of your hearing challenges might be. Part of the test will require a familiar voice. It is important for you to bring a spouse, child, or significant other to this appointment. The testing takes about 35 minutes. The specialist will then explain the results and answer any questions you may have. Finally, if it is determined that hearing aids would be beneficial, the specialist will program hearing aids according to your test results and let you listen to today’s technology. If you decide you’re ready for help, we will select what technology would be best for your lifestyle and budget and schedule a fitting. Not ready? No pressure. We’ll be here when you are.

Hearing Aid Repairs

We work with the best manufacturers in the industry who offer great hearing aids with excellent warranties but sometimes a hearing aid quits working. Often when a patient brings in a hearing aid thinking it needs a repair, we find that a thorough cleaning does the trick. Sometimes we have to send it to the manufacturer for repair. When we do, very often we are able to fit our patient with a loaner hearing aid so they can continue to enjoy great hearing while their aid is repaired. We fit loaners on a first come first serve basis. All of our hearing aid repairs come with a 1 year warranty unless otherwise stated at the time of repair. We can still send a hearing aid for repair even if you didn’t purchase it from us.

Hearing Aid Fitting

The fitting appointment will last approximately 60 minutes. First, we’ll program the hearing aids according to the results gathered at the hearing test. Then we will show you how to insert and care for your hearing aids. Lastly, we will answer any questions, perform a short test to verify the results, and schedule your one week follow up.

Real Ear Measurements/ Live Speech Mapping

These tests are completed at the fitting or shortly thereafter. We use live speech mapping to ensure that the hearing aids are providing the correct benefit in the areas where you need it. This test is essential to a successful fitting and yet we are one of less than 30% of hearing healthcare providers who perform it. If your hearing healthcare provider is not performing Real Ear verification then they are relying on the manufacturers software and hoping for the best. Insist on real ear testing for your fitting. At Selective Hearing Centers we do it every time.

Assistive Listening Devices

Sometimes people require more than just their hearing aids to hear the way they’d like to. Usually it’s in the more difficult listening environments such as a restaurant or noisy gathering. We offer devices such as a remote microphone that helps the listener hear the people at their table much better than all the noise around them. We provide this device at no additional charge, with the top 3 levels of technology, if we believe it will help us reach your hearing goals.

There are several other types of assistive listening devices including amplified phones, personal sound amplifiers, remotes, TV streamers, and more. Talk to our specialist if you think you might be interested or have any questions.
